Defensible Space

Defensible space is the buffer zone we create between a building on your property and the surrounding grass, brush, trees, or wildland areas. This cleared perimeter slows or halts the spread of wildfires, protects your home from radiant heat and flying embers, and provides firefighters with a safe working area.

Defensible space is typically divided into three specific zones to systematically reduce fuel around your property:

1. The Immediate Zone (0 to 5 feet): this is the most critical area and acts as an ember-resistant buffer. It’s important to clear combustibles, modify landscaping, and remove hazards from your property,

2. The Intermediate Zone (5 to 30 feet): The goal in this zone is to change the behavior of the fire by interrupting its path. Spacing out plants and trimming branches prevents fire from climbing into the trees.

3. The Extended Zone (30 to 100+ feet), This zone acts as a transition area to slow the fire down, the goal here is to reduce fuel by cutting grass and removing debris and dead branches.

How We Create Defensible Space

At Block&Tackle we use these techniques to create a fire safe property that also looks beautiful:

  • Forestry mulching and mastication

  • Wood Chipping

  • Land clearing

  • Wood hauling

  • Hand thinning

  • Tree trimming

  • Brush clearing

Not sure where to start? Block & Tackle can help.

We work with homeowners to create practical, property-specific defensible space plans that balance wildfire safety, forest health, aesthetics, and budget.

Whether you have a small lot or a large mountain parcel, we offer a range of fuel reduction services to help create defensible space around homes, outbuildings, driveways, and
access roads.
